Also ‘enjoyed’ may not be the right word for this movie, which tackles some pretty sensitive issues concerning tribals and how they are treated by the system.

I say surprisingly because friends’ recommendations don’t always turn out winners. So we booked the tickets and trotted off as a couple to this movie which, surprisingly, we enjoyed. My husband, who’s a film buff too, had heard good things about this one from his friends. The binge started with a Tamil movie called Viduthalai (Part 1) which means Freedom. The magic of movies! The ones I watched recently took me on different flights of fantasy some of which were engaging and thought provoking and others quite confusing to be honest. Then that stooping walk down the aisles craning to look for our seats, settling in and looking up with rapt expectancy to be whisked away on the wings of imagination. You know the merry feeling of pushing the heavy doors to walk into a dim, hushed auditorium which may be smelling of fresh popcorn if we’re lucky. The past few weeks have seen me go to more movies than I have the entire last year. Also because I’m sure I’ve missed some of the many dialogues, though the subtitles really helped! As an aside, I did wonder how much the entire script would have weighed! 🙂 So for me, Oppenheimer is definitely worth watching again. But it would have evoked completely different emotions and maybe not too many discussions. It would have been a more sensorial and dramatic one for sure. Given the same material, Steven Spielberg would have created an entirely different movie. But then when it’s Christopher Nolan making a movie he could probably ask for the moon and he’d be flown there. For someone who gave us stellar performances in movies such as Girl on a Train, she seemed to be holding back in her role as Kitty. Emily Blunt didn’t seem to fully get into her role. is impressive in his understated role expressing submission, cunning and hurt as required. And if he was trying to glorify Oppenheimer, why would Nolan cast an actor who’s acclaimed for his negative roles like in Peaky Blinders. I first saw Cillian Murphy in Red Eye way back in 2005 where he essayed the role of a villain so well, he and his character has stayed with me.

And if he’s seen as one because Nolan has made a movie on him, well it’s the audience’s preconceptions coming to the fore. And yes, he is presented with all his foibles and flaws, not really characteristic of a hero. Nolan’s smooth use of Oppenheimer to take us through the labyrinthe of political machinations and emotional pressure points is commendable. To me the film seemed to be about politics and how a handful of people, mostly men, could decide the fate of nations and ordinary people like you and me, sitting in rooms far away. I had heard all of these remarks before seeing the movie and was conscious of checking whether there was any truth in them while I watched it. While many acknowledged that it was an outstandingly made movie, they also felt that it made a hero out of someone who was the cause of such a horrific disaster. Must have taken a hell of a research team to gather credible content, making it watertight and foolproof enough to feature renowned names without inviting defamation cases and law suits. That’s not a very easy combination to achieve when there’s so much conversation! Oh yes, the movie is a lot of talk, talk & talk. I was blown away by how nuanced yet intense the movie was. And what a daring choice of subject! No matter how accomplished or celebrated a movie maker is, it takes some confidence to plunge into the perilous, grey areas Oppenheimer explores. There’s no doubt that it’s an expertly created, gripping movie. What is the commonality? If we are to only look at Box Office collections then even a Dream Girl 2 seems to be rocking it! Ha. Just because they were released around the same time is no reason discuss them both in the same breath. Well, before I go on, I must say that it was quite disturbing to watch Oppenheimer being compared with Barbie. The movie so overwhelmed me with its intensity and craftsmanship that I thought I should give myself some breathing space, but now it’s been too long! Thankfully, the essence of the movie has stayed unlike few others that I don’t remember having watched at all until someone outlines the story. I was keen on writing about Oppenheimer the very night I watched it.
